A narrow pilot connected to existing systems creates better evidence than a broad platform purchase without a measurable failure target.
What changed?
The technology is moving from isolated demonstrations into practical production support.
That does not require an immediate MES or ERP replacement.
Many first pilots can use existing work orders, alarm histories, operator notes, cycle counts, energy readings, vibration data, or scheduled inspections.
Why does it matter?
A useful pilot must compare avoided downtime against alert volume, missed failures, maintenance hours, and production disruption.
The first target should be common enough to observe and costly enough to matter.
Rare catastrophic failures can be important, but they usually provide too little data for a short learning cycle.
What should we watch?
Sensor changes, operator behavior, seasonal loads, and process updates can make old patterns unreliable.
A correlation is not automatically a cause.
